Often you’ll notice cement or concrete window sills on older homes, and if your home belongs to that category, then you’ll need to know how to repair concrete window sills or cement window sills.
Concrete or Cement Window Sills
Older houses that have concrete or cement window sills need to be maintained from time to time to keep them in good condition, which requires a lot of efforts from the homeowners. Even the most knowledgeable homeowners find it confusing when it comes to fixing cement or concrete window sills. Your concrete seal may go through different types of damage and wear. It is imperative to repair each type of damage in the right manner so that the wholeness of the window sill and the safety of the window, are preserved.
Readying Steps:
- Using a firm brush, rub off the surface of any damaged area. Remove as much of the concrete debris as you possibly can.
- Sand any rough concrete areas with rough-grit sandpaper and try to make the concrete as even as is possible.
- The cement or concrete window sills should be thoroughly rinsed to wash away the loosened concrete and sanding dust. Then wait for two days so that the window sill can completely dry out.
Repairing Horizontal Surface – Steps Involved:
- Using caulk, the small or medium cracks in your cement or concrete window sills need to be repaired. The thin tip of a bottle of silicone latex caulk needs to be fixed into each of the cracks and overfilled by ¼ inch. With the assistance of a small, putty knife, the caulk should then be distributed and flattened. Using the knife’s edge, scrape away any clutter or disorder.
- Then after fixed areas should be filled or edges and corners should be revived with a prepared concrete patch. Using the trowel’s edge, push away the soft patch products into the cavities. Then, smoothen and shape the patches using the flat surface of the trowel.
- Resurface cracked or stained window sills with new concrete. Using a paintbrush, apply a concrete bonding agent over the whole window sill. Using a trowel, apply a 3/8 inch thick layer of concrete all over the sill.
- Usually, repairs will dry in 1 or 2 days. Once they have dried, it’s time to patch new concrete for around five days.
Repairing Vertical Surface – Steps Involved:
- Use epoxy for repairing vertical cracks. The injection ports that come in your kit needs to be injected along the crack, pushing them in as much as you can. Place one port at each end of the crack and keep the others spaced ½ inch to inch apart.
- Use epoxy adhesive to coat the broken or damaged area on the inside and outside using a paintbrush. Ensure you place the adhesive as near as you can to the ports but not on top of them. You need to wait for 3 minutes till the adhesive gets gluey.
- Fill epoxy in the injection ports, beginning from the lowest towards the highest port. Stop filling the current port when you notice the epoxy in the cavity of the one above it. Each port needs to be enclosed with its related cap and allow the epoxy to dry for two days.
- Step 4: Hammer the injection ports at a 45-degree angle. Next, each port needs to be taken out of the crack. Take away the extra epoxy on the window sill using a paint scraper or putty knife.
